Signed statement, 22 Mar. 1859, of James A. Duffus, Deputy Sec[re]t[ar]y [of] State, Charleston, S.C., attesting to the fact that he had examined the mortgages in the Secretary of State's office since 1820 and found no encumbrances on African American slaves Sophia, Paul, and Thomas by Dr. W[illia]m G. Ramsay or I.H. Schulte. Letter, 14 Jan. 1864, Naval Store, Charleston, S.C., from Duffus, in his official capcity as "Naval Store Keeper," to Charleston merchants H. Horlbeck & Brothers, relating instructions from Commodore [D.N.] Ingraham re the Confederate government's plan to seize a store owned by the Horlbeck firm, with a copy of Daniel Horlbeck's immediate reply, 14 Jan. 1864, expressing regrets that the firm would be unable to comply with the request since the store was "the only place... to store salt brought from Christ Church [in Charleston County, S.C.] weekly," as well as provisions for the men, horses, and mules employed in the salt making." Includes draft of letter, 18 Jan. 1864, from Daniel Horlbeck to Commodore Ingraham presenting his case against seizure of the family store.
